We urgently need to raise £750 to help a Bosnian mother of a family living in extreme poverty in Tunisia. Her health is deteriorating, and she desperately needs medical attention that she simply cannot afford.
During the war in Bosnia, her husband was deported to Tunisia, where he was imprisoned for 10 years. Following his release, the family was left stranded in a foreign country without proper legal status or support. Unable to work legally, her husband has been unable to provide for his family, leaving them trapped in poverty for many years.
The family lives in appalling conditions, occupying just two makeshift rooms built on the rooftop of a four-storey building. Their accommodation is little more than a shack, with a tiny improvised kitchen and old mattresses infested with bed bugs. The children regularly suffer from bites, and even the most basic necessities are a daily struggle.
After years of unimaginable hardship, this mother's physical and mental health has deteriorated significantly. She suffers from severe PTSD, depression, anxiety and panic attacks and is receiving psychiatric treatment.
Her physical condition has now become particularly concerning. She is experiencing severe symptoms, extreme weakness and exhaustion, to the point where she struggles to climb even a single flight of stairs. Yet she lives on the roof of a four-storey building.
She urgently needs medical investigations, beginning with essential blood tests costing £250, to help establish what is causing her symptoms and what treatment she may require.
Her dental health is also in a devastating condition. Years of poverty have forced her to rely on temporary, inexpensive dental repairs rather than proper treatment. These repeated short-term fixes are no longer working.
Her teeth have deteriorated so severely that she can no longer eat properly. She has already lost several teeth and is terrified of losing more. Her dentist has advised that she urgently needs to begin proper dental treatment.
The first stage of treatment, covering five teeth, is due to begin in December and will cost £500 — an amount completely beyond her means.
Meanwhile, the family continues to struggle to survive. She earns just £3 a day, barely enough to put bread on the table. Most days, their meals consist of lentils and beans, and they can afford meat only two or three times a year.
Her children also face significant health, developmental and educational challenges, adding to the family's already overwhelming difficulties.
Despite everything she has endured, this mother has continued struggling to care for her family. But now her own health is failing, and she urgently needs our help.
